Everything Mom
Mother's Day

We’ve celebrated the modern version of Mother’s Day for just over 100 years in North America since the holiday was first introduced in 1910 in West Virginia. The rest of the United States followed by 1914, with Canada making the holiday official in 1915. Internationally, it’s celebrated on different days in different countries, most in March or May.

Despite commercialization since the 1920s, Mother’s Day remains a sweetly sentimental everything-mom day, cherishing moms-to-be, aunties, grandmothers and godmothers. But it can also be a painful reminder for those grieving the loss of a parent or struggling to conceive. Even the most organized and engaged of mothers or family matriarchs may not want yet another set of expectations placed upon them, preferring a day off instead. And the aesthetics of designer motherhood with gourmet kitchen and trendy fashion, amplified by mommy influencers, has gotten push-back, with more down-to-earth moms jumping on the socials, with their messy kitchens, mismatched clothing—and lots of budget tips.
