Croesus condemned to death on a funeral pyre by Cyrus the Great. Croesus, king of Lydia. A symbol of wealth to the Greeks, he allied himself with Egypt and Babylonia against Cyrus the Great of Persia. Defeated and captured, he was condemned to the funeral pyre, but when he invoked the name of Solon, Cyrus pardonned him and appointed him his advisor. From Ward and Lock's Illustrated History of the World, published c.1882.
