Victorian Stereoview card from circa 1900 India through the stereoscope.1903 historic social history images. Wayfarers on a straight 30 mile road lined with stately poplars. Baramula to Cashmere. This is the chief highway from Baramula, where the Jhelum river cuts through a gorge in the mountain wall—to the beautiful capital of the Maharajah in the famous Vale of Cashmere. The Vale itself is an oval plain about 25 x 74 miles in extent, itself some 6000 feet above the sea and all surrounded by snow-eovered mountains, some of them among the highest peaks in the world. In the sunny basin between the peaks is a bit of earthly paradise, — and this is the road that leads to Paradise! Poplars like these stately beauties are abundant all through the valley, especially alongside the water courses where a great many were set out, years ago, by native princes with a eye for the picturesque. A great many famous people have traveled over this road in quaint native carts Cashmere has been a favorite resort of the British for the last half century, in fact ever since they realized what a delightful place it is in summer, while the central and southern districts of India are suffering unendurable beat. It takes three days to come by Ekka or tonga (native wagons) from Murree, 190 miles away outside the mountain barrier. Thomas Moore’s poem, “ Lalla Rookh. was a purely fanciful romance of this region, but it was enormously popular in its day and furnished the idea for several good musical compositions. These dark-skinned natives are lineal descendants of some of the oldest tribes in India. Some are believers in the old Hindu faith and some are Mohammedans. In the city of Cashmere (or Srinagar) a good many just such natives find employment in spinning and dyeing wool and weaving the famous Cashmere shawls, or producing curious pieces of craftsmanship in gold, silver and copper wares. There is an art museum at Srinagar full of beautiful products of Indian workmen.
