Magic lantern slide circa 1880.Victorian/Edwardian.Social History. Slide set: The River Thames: from its head springs to the sea, lecture. London, and St. Paul's, from the River. St. Paul's Cathedral is the most conspicuous building in the Metropolis, and is also the largest Protestant Church in the world. It was built by Sir Christopher Wren to replace the one which was totally destroyed in the great fire of London. The top of the gilded cross is 404 feet from the pavement below. The Thames Embankment does not at present extend below Black friars Bridge ; consequently, this part of the river bank is yet covered with wharfs and warehouses.
