The Old Provost is a military prison finished in early 1838 as part of the Governor's 1835 defensive plan for Grahamstown. Built to a unique design in the British Cape Colony it was designed to allow for constant surveillance of the prisoners as the prison is shaped as a quarter circle with eight cells surrounding the exercise yard. The building is now preserved and used as a cafe.
