The attack on Fort Moultrie, Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, on June 28, 1776 during the American Revolution. The fort, then called Fort Sullivan, was built to defend Charleston, South Carolina, but was only partially completed when nine British warships attacked. However the fort withstood their bombardment and were forced to withdraw under heavy defensive fire. The commander of the fort during the battle was William Moultire and the fort was subsequently renamed in his honour.
