Ice caves in the European Alps are melting at an alarming rate. When we think about the effects of climate change on the cryospheric components of the earth, we naturally think of majestic ice sheets, glaciers and sea ice. Ice caves are vulnerable too. A strong draught blows through the cave system, which reverses direction according to the seasons. In winter, one gets sucked into the cave, whereas in summer, one has to fight their way against the strong headwind to get inside. The draught is created because the cave has another entrance higher than this one pictured. In summer, warm outside air blows through the cave from top down, melting the ice formations inside the cave as it does so. As the climate warms the summer melting gets worse and worse each year. Pictured here is an area of the tourist part of the cave known as the Eispalast or Ice Palace in English language. It is a giant frozen lake at the end of the guided tour. Here we have used a combination of buring magnesium (mg) ribbon and LED light panels. (Please see colour corrected files as these RAW photographs were captured using two different types of colour lighting and need to be altered and corrected for real daylight temperatures.)
